Has built-in support for local volume mountsĪt this point, I knew I have a winner on my hands. It comes bundled with a local Kubernetes cluster as the backend, and it works much faster than any other tool I’ve checked (as much as I could see).It supports both docker and containerd, using docker-cli and nerdctl respectively.First of all, Rancher is backed by a large community so I knew there was a good chance this will be what I was looking for.To make things short and easy I'll put all the ones I've tried and the pros and cons of each. On the get-go, we can consider, a few good alternatives. Now, we can try to find a better (and free) alternative. Although in theory, qemu is a small efficient hypervisor, it has one big flaw when it comes to doing some heavy tasks, the I/O is out the roof for example, when you try to build a medium size docker image. The reason for that is that in order to make docker desktop do its magic it needs a Linux backend, so the good folks at docker bundled a small QEMU virtual machine to handle all the server-side heavy lifting.
